Silla + Rise
Silla + Rise blend Inuit throat-singing with futuristic dancefloor beats. The vocalist duo, Cynthia Pitsiulak (Kimmirut, Nunavut) and Charlotte Qamaniq (Iglulik, Nunavut) make up Silla. Their name comes from the Inuktitut word “Sila” meaning weather. Sila is what surrounds us; it is what connects us to our land, to the moon, sun and stars, the ocean and the air we breathe.
Rise is Ottawa’s Rise Ashen, a Juno Award-nominated global-grooves producer, DJ and dancer who has spent his life pursuing the intersection of traditional and futuristic music. Qamaniq and Pitsiulak bring their traditional sound repertoire to every performance. The group’s artistic process has been improvisational, with all three bringing forth ideas for hours, letting songs morph and drift from one place to another, the new energy guiding them into new sound spaces. Silla + Rise embrace and honour Inuit culture by preserving and performing traditional and contemporary throat songs and by paying homage to our land.
