Samian

Originally from the First Nations community of Pikogan in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Samian proudly wears his colours and those of an entire People, for whom he reclaims respect and recognition. Discovered in 2004 thanks to the Wapikoni Mobile, he has since released four albums of which Face à la musique (2011) won a Felix at the ADISQ gala for hip-hop album of the year. He has performed shows across Canada and in more than a dozen countries around the world. He has also published a book of collected poems from three of his first albums. Several of his texts are now in some of Quebec’s school textbooks. In February 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Ariste pour la Paix prize.

Samian is also a photographer and was a spokesperson for Montreal’s World Press Photo exhibit in 2015 where he also presented some of his photography. The following year, he introduced his first photo exhibit titled Enfant de la Terre, at the Place des Arts. Since then, the exhibit has been welcomed in numerous galleries, museums and theatres throughout Quebec. The entire contents of the exhibition were published as a book in 2016. Samian is also an actor, notably in an Oscar-nominated film, and a television host for the documentary series En marge du monde (2019) for TV5 Monde in France.
