With a style galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty, sisters Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay come together as an Inuit throat singing duo, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions, they enthrall their listeners. With roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq regions, the two sisters grew up in Yellowknife, N.W.T., where keeping a connection to their Inuit culture was often challenging. After years of developing their impressive skills, they developed their own otherworldly sound. As the sisters approached adulthood, they realized katajjaq (Inuit-style throat singing) was not only a musical expression, but a radical, political act of cultural revitalization.
